Three things

Why this land

European, traceable and analysed saffron, grown on granite land that imposes low yields and gives each harvest its identity.

The product.

FICÔA grows European-origin saffron in Peroficos, traceable and analysed under ISO 3632. Granite, drought and the Côa valley’s temperature shifts impose low yields — but give every harvest an identity we choose to release as a vintage.

Why here.

This poor soil forces the plant to reach deep. The village brings the gestures, the family brings continuity, and every harvest brings proof. We do not promise abstract perfection: we publish the result, learn, and begin again better.

Why now.

Demanding buyers seek a clear origin, measured quality and a direct link to the people who grow. FICÔA begins small, on one precise land, with a harvest that can be told and proven.

The first harvest to leave the house

Vintage I

Approximately one hundred numbered editions. The land sets the number, not us.

One October morning before sunrise, Maria will walk into the field and pick FICÔA’s first harvest. No one will know which morning in advance: the flower decides.

There will be around one hundred Vintages, each bearing its own number. We will know the final number only when everything has been dried and weighed. Whatever happens next, there will never be another Vintage I.

Vintage Zero will never be sold. It is the eight grams from 2025 — our first family trial, classified Category II after a summer that was too hot and a poorly chosen box. Those eight grams taught us when to pick, how to separate the threads, and what never to repeat.

Your Vintage includes two vials of whole threads — one sealed to keep, one to cook — a Peroficos stone engraved with your number, a card signed by Maria, fifteen percent for life on what the Quinta makes, priority access to the future FICÔA 8 serum, and the doors of the Quinta.

Terras de Riba-Côa

The place

Along the Côa valley, people have carved stone for thirty thousand years. Nothing grows quickly in Peroficos. Everything grows true.

Horses, aurochs, signs we can no longer read: the valley holds one of the world’s oldest open-air art galleries. They passed here and wanted to leave a mark. We are doing the same, with saffron.

Peroficos is a tiny village. Around thirty people in winter. In summer, the diaspora returns to its roots for family, the procession and the dance. Around our plots, old granite houses have stood for centuries.

The soil is poor. Saffron must search for water between the rocks. As with great vines, what costs the plant creates the richness of the fruit.

FICÔA exists in no dictionary. The name carries the Côa and echoes ficar — to stay, in Portuguese. A name for those who return. And stay.

What it is, what we make of it

Saffron

No spice has been so precious, for so long, across so many continents. Every FICÔA lot is measured and published under ISO 3632.

We test. We learn. We turn it into experience.

Picked at dawn, separated by hand the same day, gently dried below 55 °C, stored in tinted glass, cool and dark.

Every lot is analysed by an independent laboratory: crocin for colour, picrocrocin for taste, safranal for aroma, and moisture. No self-declared “premium quality”. Measurements.

In cooking, half a gram perfumes dozens of plates. Saffron does not dominate a dish: it reveals it. It does not improve with age; it should be opened and cooked, while the stone, card and number remain.

The hands of the Quinta

Those who make it

Maria is a radiant woman. Every vial bears her signature — because without her, there is nothing.

Maria comes from a family that has cultivated this land and these vines for generations. From her father she inherited hands that know how to work. People call them magical. She simply says that she listens.

The flower opens one morning and closes that evening, forever. Maria is in the field before dawn. Three threads per flower, removed one by one. Hundreds of flowers for a few grams.

Three trades work around her: Lavradores prepare the land, Apanhadoras pick flowers at dawn, and Escolhedoras separate and dry the threads. Pay follows the work and measured quality.

The return

The founder & the family

He did not return out of nostalgia. He returned out of conviction: he sees in these villages what others no longer see.

One day Philippe returned to Peroficos. He knew the road by heart: it was the road of his childhood summers.

After twenty years building companies in advertising and digital, he wants to create more than a saffron brand here. FICÔA is a prototype for a profitable company where value returns to the people who work and to the village that hosts it.

His parents left Portugal for France. He grew up between the French Republic’s schools and the village’s values. His son Simon was seven at Vintage Zero and will be eight at Vintage I: the fifth generation on this land.

Maria, Francisco and Daniel hold the house together. Kindness, land and courage. Nothing leaves the Quinta without passing through their hands.

The cycle, the serum, and after

What comes next

Saffron is only the beginning. Vines, oil, skincare, tomorrow wine — one land, one standard, one sharing.

FormulationTestingCertificationLaunch

Our vines give grapes. Grapes give wine. Seeds give an oil that will carry saffron into our future serum. What remains returns to the land.

FICÔA 8 will arrive when it has been formulated, tested and certified. An amber, refillable bottle resting on Côa granite. Not one more product: a small skincare house whose legitimacy comes from the land it cultivates.

FICÔA also wants to prove a repeatable village model: a high-value crop on difficult land, three clearly paid trades, quality proven by a third party, sharing written into contracts, and a fund for what the village lacks.

Peroficos first. Then, if the numbers and the land prove the model, other villages.

Village capitalism

The manifesto

Our gold is not yellow. It is red, it grows in stone, and it belongs to those who make it grow.

We are the children of a generation that left Portugal to build a life in France — and built it with their hands.

We believe in hard land and slow gestures. We believe in farming common sense. We believe the experience of elders is worth gold — and that it is time to pay it as such.

This is not philanthropy. It is business, but business where wealth is shared better: twenty percent of net profit to the village, thirty percent to the hands that make the gold, and fifty percent to the founding family that invests.

We would rather tell the truth than make things look pretty. Our first lot was Category II. The next will aim higher. We test. We learn. We turn it into experience.

Adopting FICÔA is not only buying exceptional saffron. It is believing in a model where value returns to those who create it and a village finds a reason to live.
